The Amenfi Central District Assembly yesterday celebrated its annual Farmers’ Day, bringing together farmers, traditional leaders, and political figures to recognize the tireless efforts of agricultural workers and promote diversification within the sector.
The event, held in the community of Amuni, aimed to showcase the district’s agricultural successes and address pressing infrastructure needs facing rural communities.
District Chief Executive (DCE) Peter Amponsah expressed gratitude to the farming community, acknowledging their dedication as the foundation of food security for the district and Ghana as a whole. He outlined the national agricultural agenda, highlighting President John Dramani Mahama’s vision for farmers in the district, which focuses on implementing strategies to boost agriculture and enhance productivity.
Member of Parliament (MP) for Joana Gyan Cudjoe encouraged the youth to embrace farming as a viable and profitable career, challenging the stereotype that agriculture is limited to traditional crop cultivation. She emphasized the importance of diversification, citing examples such as animal rearing, fish farming, and other viable areas that can generate income.
The highlight of the event was the presentation of awards, with Anthony Boakye Sika earning the prestigious title of Overall Best District Farmer. In his acceptance speech, Sika expressed gratitude to the district leadership, particularly MP Joana Gyan Cudjoe, the DCE, and the District Agriculture Officer, for their support and encouragement.
However, the celebration was not without challenges. Nana Kwaku Akandor, Chief of Amuni, brought attention to the community’s critical need for reliable mobile network connectivity, appealing to the MP to intervene and engage major telecom operators to address the issue.
The event showcased the district’s agricultural achievements and highlighted the need for continued support and investment in the sector. As Ghana strives to achieve food security and economic resilience, the role of farmers remains crucial. The Amenfi Central District Assembly’s celebration serves as a reminder of the importance of collaboration and support for the agricultural community.
The district’s efforts to promote agricultural diversification and address infrastructure challenges are expected to have a positive impact on the local economy and food security. As MP Joana Gyan Cudjoe emphasized, “Agriculture is not just about weeding; it’s about rearing animals, fish farming, and other viable areas that can generate income.”
The Amenfi Central District Assembly’s commitment to supporting farmers and addressing community needs is a testament to its dedication to the district’s development.
