The Ashanti Regional Police Command has announced the successful prosecution of an adult accused of causing harm to a minor at Duase near Kenyasi in the Kumasi Metropolis.
The case, which drew significant public attention, underscores the authorities’ commitment to protecting children and vulnerable persons.
On 22nd November 2025, a resident of Duase lodged a complaint with the Assistance of the Assembly Member regarding the arrest of Beauty Alakwe, a 34-year-old Nigerian national, in connection with an assault on a nine-year-old girl.
The case was investigated by the Kumasi Domestic Violence and Victim Support Unit (DOVVSU) of the Tafo-Pankrono Division. Following the investigation, the accused was arraigned before the Circuit Court, Tafo-Kumasi.
Court Proceedings and Verdict
On 22nd December 2025, the Circuit Court, presided over by His Honour Festus Foni Nkunu, convicted Beauty Alakwe of Causing Harm, contrary to Section 69 of the Criminal Offences Act, 1960 (Act 29).
The court sentenced the accused to:
– 15 months of imprisonment with hard labor.
– An additional 15 months for defaulting to pay a fine of GHC 6,000.00.
The convict has since been transferred to the Central Prisons, Kumasi, to commence her sentence.
The Court further ordered the Department of Social Welfare, Manhyia, to liaise with the Ministry of Gender, Children, and Social Protection to ensure the welfare and reinstatement of the victim and her family in Nigeria.
The Ashanti Regional Police Command commended the public for their cooperation and assistance in the investigation. The Command also cautioned against acts of mob justice, reiterating its commitment to the protection of children and other vulnerable persons.
This case highlights the importance of legal action in safeguarding minors and the role of community vigilance in reporting abuse. Authorities emphasize that child protection remains a priority, and investigations into related offenses will be pursued rigorously.
