In a major boost to healthcare access in the Ahafo Ano South East Constituency, the Member of Parliament, Hon. Yakubu Mohammed, has announced a comprehensive Free National Health Insurance Scheme (NHIS) registration and renewal exercise targeting 10,000 constituents across the constituency.
The initiative, which is being undertaken in collaboration with the National Health Insurance Authority (NHIA), is aimed at ensuring that residents—especially the vulnerable, uninsured, and those with expired NHIS cards—are able to access quality healthcare services without financial barriers.
According to the official announcement, the programme will cover first-time registrations as well as renewals of expired NHIS cards, thereby restoring access to essential health services for thousands of people who may have been excluded due to cost or administrative challenges.
Speaking through his office, Hon. Yakubu Mohammed underscored that the intervention forms part of his broader commitment to improving the welfare and well-being of his constituents.
“Access to healthcare is not a privilege but a fundamental right. This initiative is meant to remove financial obstacles that prevent our people from seeking medical care when they need it most,” the MP stated.
He explained that many residents, particularly in rural and peri-urban communities within the constituency, struggle to afford NHIS registration and renewal fees, leaving them vulnerable in times of illness.
The free exercise, he noted, is designed to bridge this gap and promote preventive and timely healthcare.
The programme is expected to benefit a wide spectrum of residents, including children, the elderly, pregnant women, persons with disabilities, and low-income earners.
By absorbing the cost of registration and renewal, the MP hopes to significantly reduce out-of-pocket health expenses and encourage more people to rely on formal healthcare facilities rather than self-medication.
Health officials within the constituency have welcomed the initiative, describing it as a timely intervention that aligns with national efforts to achieve Universal Health Coverage (UHC).
The free registration drive also reinforces the relevance of the NHIS as Ghana’s primary social health protection programme.
Officials from the scheme have assured residents of smooth and efficient registration processes during the exercise, urging beneficiaries to take full advantage of the opportunity.
Community mobilization and sensitization activities are expected to precede the exercise to ensure widespread participation and orderly implementation across the constituency.
Residents of Ahafo Ano South East have expressed gratitude to Hon. Yakubu Mohammed for the intervention, describing it as a clear demonstration of responsive and people-centered leadership.
Many believe the initiative will not only save lives but also reduce the financial burden on households, particularly at a time when economic pressures continue to affect access to basic services.
As the exercise gets underway, Hon. Yakubu Mohammed has called on all eligible constituents to participate fully and make good use of the opportunity.
He reaffirmed his commitment to pursuing policies and interventions that directly improve the living standards of the people he represents.
With this bold healthcare initiative, the MP continues to position access to health as a cornerstone of development in Ahafo Ano South East—ensuring that no resident is left behind when it comes to medical care.
