The Ashanti Regional Office of the Public Utilities Regulatory Commission (PURC) has appealed to electricity and water consumers in the region to prioritise conservation practices as a practical way of reducing their monthly utility bills following recent tariff adjustments.
The call was made during a radio discussion on Fox FM in Kumasi on Friday morning, where several callers expressed concern about increased charges resulting from the latest tariff reviews.
Responding to the concerns, officials of the Commission urged households, businesses, and institutions to adopt simple but effective energy- and water-saving measures to manage consumption and ease the financial burden on consumers.
“Consumers can take simple steps such as switching off lights and electrical appliances when they are not in use, fixing leaking taps, and using energy-efficient appliances to significantly reduce their consumption,” a PURC official stated.
The Commission stressed that conservation is a collective responsibility and plays a critical role in ensuring affordability and sustainability in the delivery of essential services.
“Every little effort counts. Conserving electricity and water is a win-win situation—it reduces pressure on utility systems and helps consumers save money,” PURC added.
Recommended Conservation Tips
PURC outlined several practical conservation measures for consumers, including:
Switching off lights when not in use
Fixing leaky taps promptly to prevent water wastage
Using energy-efficient appliances whenever possible
Turning off electronic devices instead of leaving them on standby
Maximising the use of natural daylight
Monitoring utility usage regularly to track and manage consumption
The Commission reaffirmed its commitment to ensuring the sustainable and reliable delivery of electricity and water services across the Ashanti Region.
It further encouraged consumers to promptly report any concerns or irregularities relating to utility supply through the appropriate channels.
PURC noted that sustained conservation efforts by consumers will not only help reduce individual bills but also contribute to the long-term stability of utility services in the region.
