Dr. Charles Dwamena, a well-known and respected figure within the New Patriotic Party (NPP), popularly referred to in political circles as Dr. China, has officially declared his intention to contest for the powerful position of General Secretary of the party, setting the stage for what promises to be a keenly contested internal race.

Dr. Dwamena made the announcement during an interview on Otec FM’s Dwaberem political show, hosted by Dr. Cash, on Wednesday, January 28, 2026—just three days ahead of the NPP’s crucial Presidential Primaries.

He described the timing as critical, noting that the decisions taken during this period would have far-reaching implications for the future of the party.

Speaking with passion and conviction, Dr. Dwamena appealed to delegates and party faithful to prioritize unity over personal ambition, stressing that the ultimate goal of the party must be to rebuild a strong, cohesive front capable of reclaiming political power in the 2028 general elections.

According to him, the NPP’s next presidential candidate must not only demonstrate competence and vision but also possess the ability to unify all factions, heal internal divisions, and restore trust among grassroots supporters as well as the broader Ghanaian electorate.

“Discipline, cohesion, and collective responsibility are non-negotiable if the NPP wants to remain a strong national force,” Dr. Dwamena emphasized.
He underscored the strategic importance of the General Secretary’s office, describing it as the engine room of the party. He explained that effective coordination, strict adherence to party structures, and strong grassroots mobilisation are essential ingredients for electoral success.
Dr. Dwamena revealed that his decision to contest for the position is driven by a deep-seated commitment to reorganising, energising, and strengthening the party, from polling station executives to the national leadership, to ensure the NPP emerges more formidable ahead of future electoral contests.

Since his declaration, his entry into the race has generated renewed debate and excitement within party ranks, injecting fresh momentum into internal discussions as the NPP enters what many describe as a defining phase of reorganisation and strategic planning.

Political analysts believe Dr. Dwamena’s candidacy could significantly reshape the dynamics of the contest, particularly at a time when calls for unity, discipline, and structural coherence continue to dominate conversations within the party.
