The Management of the Ghana Education Service (GES) has announced the completion of arrangements for the long-awaited promotion of qualified staff to the ranks of Director II and Director I, signaling a major step forward in career progression within the country’s education sector.

In an official statement issued by the Public Relations Unit at the GES Headquarters in Accra on January 28, 2026, the Service disclosed that the necessary processes to elevate eligible officers—particularly those currently on the Deputy Director rank—have been finalized.
According to the statement, a special committee comprising representatives from the GES, the Public Services Commission, the Fair Wages and Salaries Commission, and international audit firm PricewaterhouseCoopers, has submitted its final report to GES Management.
The committee’s work followed extensive consultations with key stakeholders across the education sector. Notably, teacher unions played a significant role in providing inputs and recommendations to ensure transparency, fairness, and alignment with established public service standards.
Applications and Aptitude Test Expected by First Quarter End
GES Management further indicated that the first official call for applications—alongside details of the aptitude test for promotion to Director II and Director I—will be announced by the end of the first quarter of 2026. This timeline provides clarity for thousands of eligible education professionals who have been awaiting updates on the progression framework.
In what many observers are describing as a landmark reform, Management also announced a significant policy shift: promotions to these ranks will no longer be contingent upon the availability of limited office vacancies, as was previously the case. This change is expected to remove longstanding bottlenecks that restricted career advancement within the Service.
The move aligns with a commitment made by President John Dramani Mahama to improve conditions of service and create equitable promotion pathways for teachers and education administrators across the country.
Strengthening Morale and Professional Growth
Education analysts say the decision is likely to boost morale within the Service, as many qualified officers have for years expressed concerns over stagnation due to structural limitations. By decoupling promotions from office vacancy constraints, GES is expected to foster greater motivation, enhance institutional efficiency, and strengthen leadership capacity across districts and regions.
Management emphasized that further details and comprehensive guidelines will be communicated in due course exclusively through official GES channels. Stakeholders have been advised to disregard unofficial communications and await formal announcements.
The statement was signed by Daniel Fenyi, Head of Public Relations at GES.
As Ghana continues its broader educational reforms, the latest development underscores a renewed commitment to professional growth, transparency, and improved governance within the nation’s education system.
