Why Has Heal Komfo Anokye Project Stalled Despite Assurances of Adequate Funds? — NDC’s Papa Jay Demands Answers

The National Democratic Congress (NDC) Deputy Communication Officer hopeful, Papa Jay, has raised serious questions over the apparent halt of the Heal Komfo Anokye Project (HEKAP), following public assurances by a former hospital administrator that the project account contains enough funds to ensure its continuation.

Reacting to a widely circulated media publication by Oyerepa FM on Monday, March 2, 2026, Papa Jay questioned the credibility and sincerity of the authorities overseeing the project, asking pointedly why work on such a critical national health infrastructure initiative appears to have slowed or stopped if funds are indeed available.

The publication attributes a statement to Prof. Dr. Otchere Addai-Mensah, former Chief Executive Officer of Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital (KATH), who is quoted as saying that “the Heal Komfo Anokye Project account has enough money to support the continuation of the project.

This assertion has triggered fresh public debate, especially in the Ashanti Region, where the Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital serves as a major referral center for the northern half of Ghana.

The Heal Komfo Anokye Project was launched to mobilize resources to rehabilitate and modernize KATH, addressing decades-old infrastructure challenges that have strained service delivery at the facility. Given the hospital’s strategic importance, any delay in the project has far-reaching implications for healthcare delivery across several regions.

Papa Jay, in a statement to the media, described the situation as “deeply worrying and unacceptable,” stressing that Ghanaians deserve transparency and honesty regarding projects funded by public contributions and goodwill.

“If the former CEO himself is on record saying that there is enough money in the HEKAP account, then the obvious question is: why has work stalled? Who is sitting on the funds, and for what reason?” he asked.

The NDC Deputy Communication Officer hopeful argued that the contradiction between the availability of funds and the lack of visible progress raises concerns about possible mismanagement, bureaucratic inertia, or political neglect.

According to Papa Jay, the people of the Ashanti Region, traditional leaders, health professionals, and donors who contributed to HEKAP deserve a clear, public explanation.
“This project is not a partisan initiative; it is a humanitarian and national health project.

Any delay, especially when funds are said to be available, amounts to a betrayal of public trust,” he emphasized.

He further called on the current management of KATH and the Ministry of Health to issue a comprehensive statement detailing:
The current balance of the HEKAP account
The specific reasons for the halt or slowdown of the projection.

A clear timeline for the resumption and completion of outstanding works.

Growing Public Concern.

Health workers and civil society groups have also begun expressing concern, warning that prolonged delays could worsen pressure on already overstretched facilities at KATH. With patient numbers increasing annually, stalled infrastructure projects risk undermining quality healthcare delivery and patient safety.
Papa Jay concluded by urging the government to treat the matter with urgency and openness, noting that silence or vague explanations will only fuel public suspicion.
“Ghanaians are not asking for miracles. We are asking for honesty, accountability, and action. If the money is there, then the work must go on,” he stated.

As public scrutiny intensifies, all eyes are now on the authorities responsible for the Heal Komfo Anokye Project to reconcile official claims with the reality on the ground and restore confidence in one of Ghana’s most critical health infrastructure initiatives.
