The Ashanti Regional Minister, Dr. Frank Amoakohene, has spearheaded a comprehensive medical outreach programme at the Kumasi Central Prisons, offering free health screenings to inmates as part of activities marking this year’s Ashantifest celebrations.
The initiative, organized in collaboration with the National Health Insurance Scheme and the Frank Care Foundation, was designed to bridge the healthcare gap within the prison system by delivering essential medical services to a population often underserved and marginalized. Leading a team of healthcare professionals, the Minister underscored the importance of inclusive healthcare, stressing that incarceration should not deprive individuals of access to quality medical care.
“They deserve their share of the national cake. They are part of us—circumstances may have brought them here, but their health concerns must not be overlooked,” he stated.
The medical team conducted a range of health services, including blood pressure assessments, blood glucose testing, and general medical consultations. Both male and female inmates benefited from the exercise, expressing appreciation for the timely intervention, which brought critical healthcare services directly to them.
In addition, Dr. Amoakohene commended the partnership with the National Health Insurance Authority, which is facilitating free registration and renewal of health insurance for inmates as well as the general public during the festival period. He noted that the collaboration reflects a shared commitment to expanding healthcare access across all segments of society.
As part of the visit, the Minister also inspected the ongoing construction of a clinic for the female wing of the facility. He expressed satisfaction with the progress of work and urged contractors to expedite completion to enhance healthcare delivery for female inmates.
On behalf of the Ghana Prison Service, Assistant Superintendent of Prisons, Mr. Courage Astem, commended the Minister for his dedication and humanitarian efforts, highlighting the positive impact of the intervention on inmate welfare. He further expressed optimism about sustained collaboration between the Prison Service and the Regional Coordinating Council.
Ashantifest, an annual celebration in the Ashanti Region, seeks to promote unity, peace, and socio-economic development. This outreach initiative exemplifies the Regional Minister’s commitment to inclusive governance and social responsibility, ensuring that no segment of society is left behind.
