A spirit of pride, reflection, and renewed ambition filled the atmosphere at Kumasi Technical University (KsTU) as the institution marked its 70th Anniversary with a grand celebration attended by dignitaries, academia, students, and alumni from across the country.
The event, held under the theme “70 Years of Transformative Technical Education: Honouring Our Legacy, Shaping the Future,” served as both a tribute to the university’s enduring legacy and a call to action for the next phase of Ghana’s technical and industrial development.
Representing the Vice President, Professor Jane Naana Opoku-Agyemang, the guest speaker joined the leadership and entire KsTU community to commemorate seven decades of impactful contributions to education, skills training, and national progress.
In a keynote address, the Vice President lauded KsTU for its pivotal role in shaping generations of skilled professionals who continue to drive industry, entrepreneurship, and socio-economic development in Ghana. “For seventy years, Kumasi Technical University has stood as a beacon of practical knowledge and innovation, equipping young Ghanaians with the tools needed to transform society,” she noted.
The celebration offered an opportunity to reflect on the institution’s evolution—from a modest technical institute to a leading tertiary institution recognized for excellence in applied sciences, technology, and vocational training.
A central message of the address emphasized the need for deeper collaboration between academia, industry, and government. Strengthening these partnerships, it was noted, is critical to addressing real-time developmental challenges and positioning Ghana competitively in an increasingly technology-driven global economy.
Particular commendation was given to the university’s forward-looking approach to innovation. Of special interest was a groundbreaking student-led collaboration with Kantanka Automobile, which has resulted in the development of a regenerative electric vehicle. The initiative was described as a powerful demonstration of the capacity of local institutions to lead in practical, solution-oriented innovation.
“This is a clear signal that Ghanaian ingenuity, when properly nurtured, can deliver sustainable solutions to our pressing challenges,” the Vice President’s representative remarked, urging stakeholders to invest more in research, innovation, and technical training.
The regional leadership also reaffirmed its commitment to integrating technical institutions like KsTU into broader development strategies, particularly in areas such as urban planning and city management. Such collaboration, it was emphasized, will ensure that academic knowledge translates into tangible improvements in infrastructure and public service delivery.
