The Ahafo Ano South West District Assembly, under the leadership of Hon. Abubakar Sedik, has extended support to 24 persons living with disabilities through a comprehensive empowerment initiative aimed at improving their livelihoods and well-being.

The support, which took place on Friday, May 15, 2026, covered economic empowerment, medical assistance, and educational support. As part of the distribution, one beneficiary received a tricycle to aid him in generating income to support his family. In contrast, three others were provided with deep freezers to support income-generating ventures.

Additionally, twelve beneficiaries received start-up capital to establish or expand small businesses. In the areas of healthcare and education, two individuals received medical support, while six others benefited from educational assistance to support their studies.

Addressing the beneficiaries, Hon. Abubakar Sedik expressed gratitude to President John Dramani Mahama for the timely release of the District Assemblies Common Fund, noting that 3% of the fund is allocated specifically to support persons with disabilities.

He urged beneficiaries to make good use of the items and financial assistance provided, emphasising that they should not sell them but rather use them to improve their lives.

He further encouraged persons living with disabilities not to see themselves as outcasts but as valuable members of society capable of achieving great things with the right support.

The District Director of Social Welfare and Community Development, Mengisto Opoku Akowuah, assured that the department would closely monitor beneficiaries to ensure that the support is used for its intended purposes.

Also speaking at the event, the President of the Disability Federation, Agyenim Boateng, advised beneficiaries to remain active and committed members of the association to enable others to benefit from similar interventions in the future.

The programme was attended by key officials including the Convener for the Social Services Sub-Committee, Hon. Richard Asante, Assistant Director, Stephen Addae, staff of the Department of Social Welfare and Community Development, and other officials of the Assembly.

The initiative forms part of the Assembly’s ongoing efforts to promote inclusive development and improve the quality of life for vulnerable groups within the District.
