Residents of the Offinso North District in the Ashanti Region are benefiting from a free National Health Insurance Scheme (NHIS) registration and renewal exercise aimed at improving access to healthcare and reducing financial burdens on households.
The initiative, organized by the Offinso North District Assembly in partnership with the government’s Free Primary Care programme, is being carried out across the district throughout the month of May.
An estimated 5,000 residents, including the elderly, students, traders, and farmers, are expected to register or renew their NHIS membership during the exercise.
Speaking in an interview, the Offinso North District Chief Executive, Hon Caezar Ofosu Acheampong, said the programme forms part of efforts to strengthen primary healthcare delivery and promote universal health coverage within the district.
According to him, active NHIS membership helps reduce out-of-pocket healthcare expenses and encourages residents to seek medical attention promptly whenever they fall ill.
He emphasized that accessible healthcare remains essential to improving the well-being of citizens and sustaining economic productivity within communities.
Hon. Ofosu Acheampong also advised parents and guardians to pay close attention to the health of their children during the rainy season, when cases of malaria and other illnesses are often on the rise.
He noted that possessing an active NHIS card guarantees timely medical treatment and prevents families from incurring huge medical bills, thereby easing pressure on household incomes and supporting local economic stability.
The District Public Relations Officer of the NHIS, Ali Yahaya, also encouraged residents to take advantage of the exercise by registering and renewing their cards to enjoy uninterrupted healthcare services.
The exercise is expected to further enhance healthcare accessibility and deepen public participation in the National Health Insurance Scheme across the Offinso North District.
