Former Vice-President and 2028 Presidential Candidate of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, has undertaken a major restructuring of his post-election office, appointing former Majority Leader, Hon. Osei Kyei-Mensah-Bonsu, as Chief of Staff.
The move is being viewed by political observers as a strategic step towards rebuilding the NPP and laying the foundation for the party’s preparations ahead of the 2028 general election.
As Chief of Staff, Hon. Kyei-Mensah-Bonsu will coordinate all operational activities of Dr. Bawumia’s office, a role that places him at the centre of the former Vice-President’s political and organisational machinery.
Political analysts say the appointment underscores Dr. Bawumia’s determination to establish a structured and disciplined command system as the NPP seeks to reposition itself following its defeat in the 2024 elections.
Hon. Kyei-Mensah-Bonsu, a former Member of Parliament for Suame, is regarded as one of the most experienced figures within the NPP. His extensive parliamentary career spans nearly three decades, during which he served as Majority Leader, Minority Leader and Minister for Parliamentary Affairs.
His appointment is expected to bring significant institutional experience, strategic leadership and grassroots mobilisation expertise to the Bawumia camp.
Beyond Ghana’s political landscape, Hon. Kyei-Mensah-Bonsu has also held prominent international positions, including serving as Vice-Chairman of the Global Organisation of Parliamentarians Against Corruption (GOPAC) and Deputy Chairman of the Commonwealth Parliamentary Association (CPA International).
The restructuring of the office is also seen as ending speculation about the future direction of Dr. Bawumia’s post-election political activities. It signals the establishment of a formal and coordinated structure aimed at strengthening engagement with party stakeholders and supporters across the country.
As part of the reorganisation, several key appointments have also been announced.
Former MP, Hon. Opare Ansah, has been named Director in Charge of Identifiable Activities, while former National Chairman of the NPP, Mr. Peter Mac Manu, takes up the role of Director in Charge of Political Strategy.
Former Board Chairman of the Ghana Airports Company Limited, Mr. Fred Oware, has been appointed Political Advisor, while Nana Akomea will oversee Communication and Branding.
Former Information Minister, Hon. Kojo Oppong Nkrumah, will coordinate policy activities with support from Mr. Evans Hughes. Former Deputy Minister, Anthony Abayifa Karbo, has been assigned responsibility for Organisation and Youth Inclusion, while Dr. Ekua Amoako has been appointed Spokesperson.
Party insiders believe the new structure reflects Dr. Bawumia’s commitment to building a cohesive and effective team capable of reconnecting with party members and broadening the NPP’s support base ahead of future political contests.
The appointments are expected to strengthen strategic planning, communication, policy coordination and grassroots mobilisation as the party charts its path towards the 2028 elections.
