The Ashanti Regional Coordinating Council has launched a sustained region-wide desilting and dredging campaign aimed at preventing floods and improving sanitation across the region.

The exercise, which coincided with the Regional Sanitation Day, was launched at the Dichemso-Airport Roundabout stream in Kumasi by the Ashanti Regional Minister, Dr. Frank Amoakohene, in collaboration with the Mayor of Kumasi.
The initiative is being undertaken in partnership with the National Disaster Management Organisation (NADMO) and Zoomlion Ghana Limited as part of proactive measures to keep drainage systems free from silt and waste.
Speaking at the launch, Dr. Amoakohene said the campaign forms part of the government’s broader flood prevention strategy and would be sustained across all Metropolitan, Municipal and District Assemblies (MMDAs) in the region.
He also announced the reintroduction of Town Councils under the Kumasi Metropolitan Assembly to strengthen sanitation enforcement and promote community participation in environmental cleanliness.

According to him, similar sanitation enforcement task forces will be established in other MMDAs to ensure strict compliance with sanitation regulations and improve environmental management.

Dr. Amoakohene reaffirmed the Regional Coordinating Council’s commitment to investing in preventive measures to safeguard lives and property from flooding while maintaining clean communities.

He appealed to residents to support the initiative by avoiding indiscriminate dumping of refuse into drains and participating actively in sanitation exercises to ensure a cleaner and healthier environment.
