The Northern Regional branch of the Ghana Journalists Association (GJA) has expressed profound sorrow over the passing of the Overlord of Dagbon, Ya-Na Abukari II, describing his death as a significant loss not only to the Dagbon Kingdom but to Ghana as a whole.
In a press statement signed by the Northern Regional Chairman of the GJA, Mr Yakubu Abdul-Majeed, the Association extended its heartfelt condolences to the bereaved royal family and the people of Dagbon, acknowledging the late Ya-Na’s immense contribution to peace, unity and national development.
According to the statement, the late traditional ruler’s wisdom, exemplary leadership and unwavering commitment to peace played a crucial role in fostering harmony within Dagbon and across the country.
The Association also praised Ya-Na Abukari II for maintaining a cordial relationship with journalists and supporting the work of media practitioners in the Northern Region.
“The GJA is deeply saddened by his demise. His support for media practitioners in the region and his open-door relationship with journalists contributed immensely to our work of promoting peace and accurate reportage,” the statement noted.
The Association said the late King’s counsel and guidance would continue to inspire journalists in the discharge of their professional duties despite his passing.
The GJA further prayed for Allah to grant the late Overlord eternal rest and strength to the bereaved family and the people of Dagbon during this difficult period.
Responsible reporting
The Association has, meanwhile, urged journalists covering the death and funeral activities of the late Ya-Na to exercise the highest standards of professionalism, accuracy and sensitivity.
It advised media practitioners to be circumspect in their reportage of the burial rites and traditional funeral customs to avoid publications or broadcasts that could undermine peace and social cohesion.
The statement emphasised that journalists must adhere strictly to established traditional protocols and the ethics of the journalism profession while reporting on events related to the funeral.
According to the GJA, the media have a critical responsibility to promote Ghana’s cultural values, tolerance, peace and national unity, particularly during periods of national mourning.
The Association reaffirmed its solidarity with the people of Dagbon and pledged its support as the Kingdom mourns the passing of its revered Overlord.
