The Ashanti Regional Criminal Investigations Department (CID) of the Ghana Police Service has been petitioned to investigate allegations of illegal mining in the Ahafo Ano South East District following claims that have sparked public debate.

The petition was filed by a political and social advocacy group, Ashanti Democrats, which is demanding a thorough, impartial and independent investigation into the allegations to establish the truth and uphold the rule of law.

In the petition dated July 15, 2026, the group said the allegations of illegal mining have generated widespread concern over environmental degradation, weakened public confidence in public institutions and underscored the need for transparency and accountability.
President of the Ashanti Democrats, Jerry James Sukah, who addressed journalists after presenting the petition, urged the CID to treat the matter as one of national importance and ensure that all persons with relevant information are invited to assist with investigations.
He specifically called on the police to invite social media vlogger Amaru Shakur, whose recent viral publication alleged illegal mining activities in the district.
According to Mr. Sukah, the vlogger should be asked to submit any documentary evidence, video recordings or other information in his possession to support the claims and aid investigators in establishing the facts.
The petition noted that the Member of Parliament for Ahafo Ano South East, Mohammed Yakubu, and the District Chief Executive, Ibrahim Yamba-Nelson, have both publicly denied any involvement in the alleged illegal mining activities.

The group argued that, in view of the seriousness of the allegations and the public denials by the two government officials, an independent police investigation is necessary to determine the truth, protect the reputations of innocent persons and ensure accountability where appropriate.

Mr. Sukah expressed confidence in the professionalism of the Ghana Police Service and urged the CID to act without delay.
“We trust that the CID will treat this petition with the urgency and professionalism it deserves, taking all necessary steps to ensure that the facts are established in accordance with the laws of the country,” he stated.

The Ashanti Democrats said a transparent investigation would help restore public confidence, safeguard the environment and reaffirm the country’s commitment to combating illegal mining through lawful and credible processes.
