A Coalition of Teacher Unions has suspended its planned strike over delays in placing newly promoted teachers on the appropriate salary scales.
The decision follows a meeting with the Minister of Education, Haruna Iddrisu, on Monday, August 31, after the unions had threatened to embark on industrial action if the issue was not resolved by the close of the day.
The unions had raised concerns that newly promoted teachers had not been placed on the appropriate salary scales, leaving them without the corresponding financial benefits of their promotions.
The dispute followed a directive from the Controller and Accountant-General’s Department requiring additional lists and documentation before the promotions could be implemented.
The unions argued that the directive was inconsistent with an earlier assurance by the Ghana Education Service (GES) that the automatic promotion system would be implemented by August.Ghana travel guide
However, following Monday’s engagement with the Education Minister, the unions have backed down from their planned industrial action, opting instead to allow further discussions with the government to resolve the matter.
The meeting is expected to pave the way for continued engagement between the Ministry of Education and the teacher unions on the outstanding salary placement concerns.
