A journalist working for the Multimedia Group Limited (MGL), Gary Al-Smith has lamented over the silence of the media, the clergy and civil society organizations (CSOs) under the president Nana Addo Danquah Akufo-Addo’s regime, despite the recurrence of things today which they spoke against under the erstwhile president John Mahama’s regime.According to an investigative journalist, Manansseh Azure Awuni, Gary’s response was warranted by a comment on Manasseh’s post about press freedom in the country under the current government.Gary Al-Smith responds to a comment on my post:”There is no doubt about the fact that many institutions that put the JDM government on its toes have taken a significant backseat in this current government”, he wrote.”Especially we in the media. The kind of heat we, collectively, gave the Mahama government is not what we are doing for the Akufo-Addo government at all. The clergy, same. Civil society, same”, Manasseh added.According to Awuni, his colleague at the Multimedia observes that the fear of the people to speak up is because they don’t want to be chased down.He concluded by indicating that the media and all the aforementioned groups have not done well in putting the government ok its toes adding that they are “all poorer for it.””There are legitimate fears among these groups about being silenced through communist tactics, and through a seeming governmental will to chase down those who speak against it”, he stated.Manansseh, who is currently the Editor-in-chief of The Fourth Estate has for a long time lost hope in the Nana Addo’s commitment to free press in the country. And this has left supporters of the ruling NPP and the journalist at loggerheads with each other over the matter.
