In a decisive move to strengthen environmental sanitation and promote community well-being, the Asante Akim North Municipal Assembly has announced a large-scale municipal clean-up exercise scheduled for Wednesday, January 21, 2026.

The initiative forms part of the Assembly’s broader strategy to enhance public health, restore environmental order, and rekindle civic responsibility among residents.

The exercise will take place across key areas of the municipality, with Agogo serving as the main focal point.

According to an official statement issued by the Assembly, activities will begin promptly at 6:00 a.m., with the Agogo Lorry Station designated as the central meeting and starting point for participants.

The clean-up exercise comes at a time when local authorities across the Ashanti Region are intensifying efforts to confront persistent sanitation challenges.

Municipal officials describe the initiative as more than a routine clean-up, emphasizing its importance as a preventive public health intervention.
Planned activities include the desilting of choked gutters, removal of refuse from unauthorized dumping sites, sweeping of public spaces, and the general clearing of overgrown areas.

These actions are expected to reduce breeding grounds for disease vectors such as mosquitoes and flies, thereby helping to curb the incidence of sanitation-related diseases including malaria and cholera.

“The health and safety of our residents remain a top priority,” the Assembly noted. “A clean environment is not a luxury but a necessity for sustainable development.”

Community Participation at the Core
The Municipal Assembly has underscored that the success of the exercise depends largely on active community participation.

As a result, a strong appeal has been made to residents from all walks of life to take part in the exercise and demonstrate collective responsibility.
Transport unions operating at the Agogo Lorry Station are particularly expected to play a leading role, given the station’s designation as the starting point. Market women, traders, artisans, youth groups, religious organizations, and traditional authorities have also been encouraged to mobilize their members in support of the initiative.

While the Assembly will deploy refuse trucks, sanitation personnel, and some basic tools, participants are advised to come along with personal cleaning implements such as brooms, rakes, shovels, hoes, and cutlasses to ensure efficiency and wide coverage.

Beyond its immediate health benefits, the clean-up exercise is also aimed at improving the overall appearance of Agogo and surrounding communities. Municipal officials believe that a clean and orderly environment fosters civic pride, strengthens social cohesion, and enhances the municipality’s attractiveness to visitors and potential investors.

Promotional materials released ahead of the event depict scenes of communal engagement, with residents working together in protective gear to clear drains, collect waste, and restore public spaces.

The Assembly hopes this spirit of unity and responsibility will translate into sustained behavioral change regarding waste management and environmental care.

The Asante Akim North Municipal Assembly has reiterated its commitment to promoting regular sanitation practices beyond one-off exercises. Residents are therefore being encouraged to view the January 21 clean-up as a starting point for renewed discipline and long-term adherence to proper waste disposal practices.

Residents are urged to make adequate arrangements to participate fully in this important civic exercise. The Assembly has also invited the public to follow its official communication channels for updates and post-event highlights.

Together, the municipality believes, a cleaner, healthier, and more attractive Asante Akim North can be achieved through shared responsibility and active citizenship.
