In a bold move to combat illegal mining, a combined Anti-Galamsey Taskforce has successfully carried out operations at Offin Shelterbelt and Kotokum in the Atwima Mponua District. The taskforce, comprising personnel from National Security, the Police, and the Forestry Commission, faced a violent ambush by armed illegal miners at Offin Shelterbelt.
One officer was severely injured in the attack, slashed in the knee with a machete and currently in critical condition at Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital (KATH). The perpetrators, armed with assault rifles and machetes, showcased the dangers of this fight against illegal mining.
Despite the challenges, the taskforce persevered, and following media coverage, many of the perpetrators fled the area. However, their hideouts were cleared, and the illegal miners were flushed out. All forest reserves in the area are now free from illegal mining activity.
In Kotokum, the taskforce dismantled illegal mining operations that were hindering the construction of a vital bridge. Work on the bridge is now progressing smoothly. The operation resulted in the seizure of various equipment, including:
– 9 control boards
– 6 excavator paddles
– 7 batteries
– 1 fuse board
The bravery of the taskforce is commendable, and their efforts demonstrate the government’s commitment to combating galamsey. The fight against illegal mining continues, and with the taskforce’s determination, a safer and more sustainable environment can be achieved.
