The Ashanti Regional Minister, Dr. Frank Amoakohene, has called on the Ghana Revenue Authority (GRA) to improve its engagement with taxpayers, aiming to foster voluntary compliance and mitigate the numerous complaints that frequently arise during the tax collection process.

He made this statement while addressing participants at the Annual Management Retreat and the launch of the 2025 Tax and Good Governance Month, organized by the Domestic Tax Revenue Division of the GRA in Kumasi on April 9, 2025.

The event, themed “Transforming for Impact and Growth: Accelerating Domestic Revenue Mobilization through Effective Compliance,” was chaired by the Ashanti Regional Minister. Notable attendees included Barima Amankwah Adunan Ababio II, Omanhene of Kuntenase Traditional Area, as the special guest of honor; Mr. Anthony Kwasi Sarpong, Commissioner General of GRA; Mr. Edward Apenteng, Commissioner for the Domestic Tax Revenue Division; and representatives from the business community and various religious organizations.

Dr. Amoakohene emphasized that while the government is committed to supporting the business sector, it is essential for businesses not to take the leniency of revenue collectors for granted.

He acknowledged the GRA’s accomplishment reported by Commissioner General Sarpong, noting that the Authority had collected 41 billion Ghana Cedis in the first quarter of 2025, placing it on track to reach its annual target of 220 billion Ghana Cedis. However, he urged the GRA to intensify its efforts, particularly in light of the recent cancellation of several taxes, which could create a shortfall that the Authority will need to address.

In support of enhanced engagement, Mr. Anthony Kwasi Sarpong highlighted the Authority’s recognition of the necessity for closer interactions with taxpayers. In line with the 2025 budget statement, he announced plans for extensive taxpayer engagement and education as part of a comprehensive review of the tax system, particularly focusing on Value Added Tax (VAT).

The Commissioner General affirmed that the GRA intends to maintain an ongoing educational initiative beyond the month of April.
