According to credible sources, fines collected from overloaded vehicles are being underdeclared, with authorities reportedly cutting deals with drivers.

Underdeclared Fines.

Ordinarily, trucks exceeding the recommended axle weight are required to pay a penalty of GHC 5,000 after offloading excess goods or GHC 20,000 if they opt to continue their journey with the excess load. However, Ghana Highway Authority personnel stationed at the checkpoint are allegedly underdeclaring these penalties.

Again, international trucks are often targeted, with drivers paying GHC 20,000 to continue with excess cargo, but not always receiving official receipts.

Driver’s Account.

A Burkinabe truck driver alleged that he paid GHC 20,000 but was given a receipt for only GHC 5,000. He claimed that GHA officials told him the remaining amount was for “facilitation” to avoid offloading the goods.

Ghana Highways Authority Response.

The Ashanti Regional Highway Director, Ing. Salish M. Mahamah, referred the matter to the GHA Head Office in Accra. The Head of Communications, Mr. Cecil Nobodai Obodai Wentum, did not respond to calls and messages seeking comment.

The allegations of corruption at the Akom toll booth raise serious concerns about the management of the facility and the Ghana Highway Authority’s commitment to transparency and accountability.

Further investigation is needed to uncover the truth behind these allegations and ensure that those responsible are held accountable.
