Chief of Staff Reaffirms Ghana’s Commitment to Peace at UN Arms Destruction Day

The Chief of Staff, Dr Julius Debrah, has reaffirmed the government’s unwavering commitment to safeguarding peace and security through the destruction of illicit and obsolete weapons, declaring that Ghana’s future must be built on stability, discipline and the rule of law.

Speaking as the Guest of Honour at the National Arms Destruction Ceremony to commemorate the United Nations Arms Destruction Day, Dr Julius Debrah said the destruction of illegal weapons was a strong demonstration of the country’s resolve to prevent the proliferation of small arms and reduce the threat of armed violence.

He stressed that genuine national security was not measured by the quantity of weapons in stock but by the courage to eliminate instruments capable of threatening innocent lives and undermining peace.

“The destruction of these weapons is a practical commitment to protecting lives and preserving the peace that Ghanaians cherish,” he stated.

Dr Julius Debrah said the exercise reflected Ghana’s determination to choose stability over violence, order over lawlessness and hope over fear.

He explained that by removing illicit weapons from circulation, the nation was strengthening public confidence in the security services while promoting safer communities across the country.

According to him, the government’s commitment to responsible arms control would also reinforce Ghana’s reputation as a peaceful and stable democracy within the sub-region and the international community.

The Chief of Staff called on all stakeholders, including the security agencies, civil society organisations and citizens, to continue supporting efforts aimed at preventing the proliferation of illegal arms.

He noted that sustaining peace required collective responsibility and constant vigilance, adding that every Ghanaian had a role to play in safeguarding national security.

The ceremony brought together representatives of the country’s security institutions ,including the minister for interior,Hon Muntaka Mohammed,Deputy Defense Minister,Hon Brogya Gyenfi and other stakeholders to observe the destruction of confiscated and obsolete weapons as part of activities marking the UN Arms Destruction Day.

The exercise underscored Ghana’s continued commitment to international efforts to combat the illicit trade in small arms and light weapons while promoting peace, security and sustainable development.
