Cocoa farmers to once again enjoy free fertilizers under NDC

Hon.Eric Opoku ,Member of Parliament for Asunafo South in the Ahafo region has assured that the second coming of John Dramani Mahama will ensure that cocoa farmers enjoy free distribution of fertilizers.

According to him the NPP government has borrowed cocoa farmers with fertilizers with a higher bills but indicated the killer bills will be terminated should the NDC come to power in 2021.

The NDC , through Ghana Cocoa Board (COCOBOD) will commence the distribution of free fertilizers for cocoa farmers throughout the country.

The movement of fertilizers will start from warehouses in Tema, to all the various cocoa growing areas as soon as NDC comes to power.

He said in 2016, in all some 2.5 million bags of granular fertilizer was earmarked to cover some 333,333 hectares of cocoa farms and was  distributed to the country’s cocoa farmers.

Also, another batch of 1.4 million litres of liquid or foliar fertilizer – went to some 700,000 hectares of cocoa farms. Both the granular and foliar fertilizers were meant for fruit bearing cocoa trees only.

The granular and the foliar fertilizers  took  care of over one million hectares of cocoa farms nationwide.

To boost rapid vegetative growth and development of nurseries and young cocoa planted last 2016   some 200, 000 bags of Ammonium Sulphate fertilizers was also planned to cover some 80,000 hectares of such cocoa farms.

Distribution of the fertilizers was done by only certified agencies, by the COCOBOD, at no costs.

He said this at the NDC’s Town Hall Meeting on the people’s manifesto held at Kumasi,KNUST campus
