The Founder and Leader of the Action People’s Party (APP), Kenneth Nana Kwame Asamoah, has described the Minister of Food and Agriculture, Eric Opoku, as the best candidate to lead the National Democratic Congress (NDC) into the 2028 general election.
According to him, Mr Opoku possesses the leadership qualities, humility and strong human relations required to sustain the NDC’s leadership of the country after President John Dramani Mahama’s tenure.
Speaking on Sompa TV in Accra, Mr Asamoah, who is known for his outspoken political commentary, said the Agriculture Minister had demonstrated a genuine concern for the welfare of Ghanaians and had the capacity to connect with people across the political divide.
He said Mr Opoku’s character and relationship with ordinary people made him stand out among the potential contenders for the NDC’s presidential candidacy in 2028.
“Eric Opoku has a good heart for the good people of Ghana. His human relations alone are a plus,” Mr Asamoah said.
The APP leader further argued that Mr Opoku exhibited some of the qualities that had endeared President Mahama to many Ghanaians.
He said the minister’s humility, respect for individuals and ability to relate to people at different levels of society could make him a strong candidate capable of continuing the NDC’s political tradition beyond the current administration.
Mr Asamoah maintained that although several members of the NDC had the competence and experience to occupy top positions in the party, the party would benefit from considering Mr Opoku for the flagbearership position ahead of the 2028 elections.
He said the decision to elect a flag bearer should be based not only on political experience but also on the individual’s character, leadership style, relationship with the people and ability to unite the party.
Mr Asamoah said the NDC needed a candidate who could consolidate the gains of the Mahama administration and provide continuity in the party’s leadership after 2028.
He therefore urged members and supporters of the NDC to give serious consideration to Mr Opoku when the party begins the process of selecting its presidential candidate for the next general election.
He stressed that his endorsement was based on what he described as Mr Opoku’s personal qualities and his perceived ability to connect with the Ghanaian people.
“Everyone in the NDC deserves a better position, but the flagbearership should be given to Eric Opoku for continued leadership of the NDC,” he said.
