Ghana’s Energy Minister opens 3rd West African LPG Conference and Expo in Accra

Ghana’s Energy Minister Hon. Dr. Matthew Opoku Prempeh opened the 3rd West African LPG Conference and Expo at the Movenpick Ambassador Hotel in Accra.

The Conference is the first to be hosted in Ghana and was on the theme ” Towards making LPG the Clean Fuel of West Africa”. The Minister said the Conference have proven to be a credible mouthpiece in promoting new perspectives and fresh thinking in improving LPG access to consumers as clean and affordable energy.

 

Dr. Matthew Opoku Prempeh said the LPG industry presents an attractive solution to leverage the shift to cleaner energy sources whiles promoting Africa’s industrialization agenda.

According to the Minister this will take the collective efforts from academia,the industry and the government to prudently push West Africa to maximize the economic gains across the LPG value chain.

The Minister who is also Member of Parliament for Manhyia South re-emphasized the government’s determination to ensure that at least 50% of Ghanaians have access to LPG by the year 2030 as part of contributions towards climate change mitigation hence the introduction of the NLPGPP, The NLPGPP is an improvement of the erstwhile focus on commercial and industrial use. For a start , some 40,000 pieces of LPG cook stoves are to be distributed nationwide this year ” he said.

The Minister further said that the utilization of LPG as household fuel has been expanding in several countries in West Africa since the early 1990s, but the average per capita consumption in the region low by international standards.

Discussions via the forum on the promotion of LPG through policies and national regulations in West Africa, LPG consumption could be significantly increased in the region as part of measures to combat climate change by reducing emissions.

The 3- day Conference and Expo is aimed at reaching constructive on making LPG available at an attractive price in the West African Markets and attracting the requisite investments for LPG storage and distribution infrastructure………Story by Bugbila Moadow.
