In a significant development aimed at promoting peace and diplomacy in the ongoing conflict between Russia and Ukraine, the Speaker of Parliament of Ghana, Rt. Hon. Alban Sumana Kingsford Bagbin, has been appointed to the Inter-Parliamentary Union’s (IPU) Task Force on the peaceful resolution of the war in Ukraine.
This appointment was announced by the Parliamentary Service of Ghana in a letter dated October 20, 2025, addressed to the editor for immediate release.
The IPU President cited Speaker Bagbin’s “integrity, impartiality, and ability to build trust with all parties” as the basis for his appointment to this critical task force. Rt. Hon. Bagbin joins seven other distinguished parliamentarians on the task force, which comprises members from all six IPU geopolitical groups. The appointment underscores Speaker Bagbin’s reputation as a seasoned international peace negotiator and broker.
Established in March 2022 as an ad-hoc body, the IPU Task Force aims to encourage dialogue between parliamentarians from Ukraine and the Russian Federation.
Since its inception, the task force has convened no less than thirteen meetings and conducted a mission to Kyiv and Moscow in July 2022.
Additionally, the task force has held separate consultations with parliamentary delegations from Ukraine and Russia every six months during IPU Assemblies. At a time when avenues for dialogue are scarce, this task force remains one of the few platforms where both Ukrainian and Russian parliamentarians continue to engage.
In a letter appointing Speaker Bagbin to the task force, Martin Chungong, the Secretary General of the IPU, expressed confidence that Speaker Bagbin’s leadership and experience will enhance the work and impact of the task force. The task force’s mission is to support diplomatic efforts in seeking a peaceful resolution to the war in Ukraine.
As a member of the task force, Speaker Bagbin will attend in-person meetings during IPU Assemblies, participate in hearings and discussions with the Ukrainian and Russian IPU delegations, and engage in dialogue with government leaders from the conflicting countries. The ultimate aim of these efforts is to bring about an end to the war in Ukraine.
Speaker Bagbin’s inclusion in the task force positions Ghana’s parliament at the forefront of international efforts to broker peace in Ukraine. His involvement highlights the importance of parliamentary diplomacy in conflict resolution and underscores Ghana’s commitment to contributing to global peace initiatives.
The appointment of Rt. Hon. Alban Sumana Kingsford Bagbin to the IPU Task Force on the peaceful resolution of the war in Ukraine reflects the international community’s recognition of his capabilities in fostering dialogue and peace. As the situation in Ukraine continues to be a focal point of global concern, Speaker Bagbin’s role in this task force is expected to contribute meaningfully to efforts aimed at achieving a peaceful resolution to the conflict.
