Dr. Ahmed Lukeman, a physician specialist with the Ghana Armed Forces Critical Care and Emergency Hospital, expresses significant concern about the use of plastics as receptacles for hot foods.

“When hot food is placed in plastic containers, especially those not designed for high temperatures, harmful chemicals can leach into the food,” Dr. Lukeman explains.

“These chemicals, such as BPA and phthalates, have been linked to a range of health problems, including hormonal disruptions and increased cancer risks,” he said.

Beyond personal health, the environmental toll of single-use plastic and rubber packaging is staggering. These materials take centuries to decompose, polluting our planet and contributing to the growing problem of plastic waste.

Jacob Attakpah, the Project Manager for Zero Waste Cities at the Green Africa Youth Organization (GAYO), highlights the long-term consequences of our reliance on disposable plastics.

“Single-use plastics are a major environmental hazard,” Attakpah states.

“They not only pollute our land and waterways but also contribute to the broader issues of climate change and wildlife endangerment. We need to shift towards more sustainable practices to mitigate these effects,” he added.

“Opting for reusable containers made of glass, stainless steel, or other safe materials is a better choice,” he suggests.

“Additionally, avoiding microwaving food in plastic containers and supporting eco-friendly packaging options can help protect both our health and the environment,” he said.
