The Chief of Bomfa in the Afigya Kwabre South District of the Ashanti Region, Nana Kwaku Twumasi, has publicly declared that his decision to leave the New Patriotic Party (NPP) for the National Democratic Congress (NDC) was influenced by what he described as disappointment with the administration of former President John Agyekum Kufuor.
Speaking at a public engagement organised by the Afigya Kwabre South District Chief Executive at Bomfa, Nana Twumasi said although he had been a committed member of the NDC for many years, he was originally an active supporter of the NPP.
The traditional ruler recounted that during the era of former President Jerry John Rawlings, he actively participated in NPP campaigns, including demonstrations against the high cost of cement under the then NDC administration.
He said he was among a group of young party activists who carried bags of cement during campaign activities to dramatise the rising cost of building materials.
Nana Twumasi also recalled an incident during an NPP campaign event in Asawase, where, according to him, three of his colleagues lost their lives after an accident, while he survived.
He explained that despite his commitment and sacrifices for the NPP, he decided to leave the party during the presidency of Mr Kufuor.
According to him, the turning point came when the former President publicly acknowledged that governing the country was more difficult than he had anticipated and appealed to Ghanaians for patience.
Nana Twumasi said the statement left him disappointed, considering the promises made during the election campaign, and he immediately decided to join the NDC.
He further disclosed that his open support for the NDC generated opposition within his community, with some residents reportedly protesting against his enstoolment because of his political affiliation.
The chief also alleged that Bomfa had over the years been deprived of critical infrastructure and socio-economic development due to partisan politics.
He called for development initiatives to be distributed equitably across communities, irrespective of their perceived political leanings, stressing that residents deserved access to basic amenities and opportunities regardless of political considerations.
