The Kumasi Metropolitan Assembly (KMA) has committed a total of GH₵660,163.00 to the construction of four footbridges across key communities in the metropolis, underscoring its resolve to improve transport safety and enhance accessibility, particularly during the rainy season.

The footbridges are to be constructed across streams at Santasi–Anyinam, Amankwatia, Ohwim, and Baabiriem (Kokoso Asubonteng),communities where seasonal flooding has long posed risks to residents, schoolchildren, traders, and other road users.

The project has been awarded to M/S D’Rigano Struct Limited, a local construction firm, following due procurement processes.

Announcing the initiative during the official handover of project sites to the contractor today, the Chief Executive Officer of the Kumasi Metropolitan Assembly, Hon. Richard Ofori Agyemang Boadi, described the investment as a critical intervention aimed at safeguarding lives and facilitating daily movement within the affected communities.

According to the Mayor, the Assembly’s focus on transport-related infrastructure reflects a broader strategy to address long-standing mobility challenges while ensuring that residents can move safely, especially during periods of heavy rainfall when streams often overflow and cut off access routes.

“These footbridges will serve as safe crossing points for residents, schoolchildren, traders, and commuters who rely on these routes daily,” Hon. Agyemang Boadi stated.

“By reducing the risk of accidents and improving connectivity, we are directly enhancing the quality of life of our people.”

He stressed that the contractor is expected to strictly adhere to the six-month completion period, while ensuring that all works meet approved designs, specifications, and quality standards. He cautioned that the Assembly would not tolerate substandard work, emphasizing that the footbridges are critical public assets intended to serve communities for decades.

“These projects are not short-term fixes. They are long-term investments in public safety and community development.

Shoddy work will not be accepted under any circumstances,” the Mayor warned, adding that the Assembly would maintain close supervision throughout the construction phase.

Hon. Ofori Agyemang Boadi further reaffirmed KMA’s commitment to transparent project implementation and effective monitoring, noting that accountability remains central to the Assembly’s development agenda.

He indicated that engineers and relevant departments of the Assembly will work closely with the contractor to ensure value for money and timely delivery.

With the handover of sites now completed, construction activities are expected to commence immediately.

The footbridge projects form part of a wider infrastructure drive by the Kumasi Metropolitan Assembly aimed at improving urban mobility, public safety, and socio-economic activity across the metropolis.

When completed, the structures are expected to significantly reduce travel disruptions, enhance community movement, and contribute to Kumasi’s overall development agenda.
