As part of the vibrant AshantiFest celebrations, leading telecommunications giant MTN Ghana has once again demonstrated its commitment to corporate social responsibility by organizing a large-scale voluntary blood donation exercise in the Mampong Municipality.
The impactful initiative, held at the bustling Dufie Square, drew an impressive response from residents and culminated in the collection of 90 pints of blood—an essential contribution toward replenishing critically low blood reserves in government health facilities across the municipality.
Medical personnel were deployed as early as 6:00 a.m., setting the tone for a well-coordinated and professionally managed exercise. Volunteers underwent thorough preliminary screenings and health assessments to ensure their eligibility and safety before donation. Beyond blood collection, the exercise also featured a comprehensive health screening component, offering services such as HIV testing, cervical cancer screening, breast cancer examinations, and eye checks—further enhancing its value to the community.
Strong Community Participation
The atmosphere at Dufie Square was marked by a sense of unity, civic responsibility, and enthusiasm. By midday, nearly 100 residents had participated in the exercise, either by donating blood or taking advantage of the free health screenings provided by the medical team.
The initiative proved to be a vital intervention in strengthening healthcare delivery in the region. Organizers of AshantiFest emphasized that the primary objective of the exercise was to ensure that local hospitals are adequately stocked with blood to respond swiftly to emergencies and surgical needs.
“The goal is simple—it is to save lives by providing a platform for voluntary blood donation. At the same time, we are reinforcing the Mampong community’s healthcare system at one of its most critical points: emergency preparedness,” a representative of the organizing team stated.
Sustaining a Culture of Giving
This year’s exercise builds on the success of a similar initiative held during the previous edition of AshantiFest at the Kumasi Central Prisons. That effort saw residents from Adum and surrounding areas donate blood to support the blood bank of the Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital, the largest referral facility in the Ashanti Region.
In addition to its regional interventions, MTN Ghana continues to make significant contributions on a national scale through its annual “Save A Life” campaign. Earlier this year in February, the initiative mobilized students from various second-cycle institutions across the country, resulting in the collection of an impressive 7,020 pints of blood to restock the National Blood Bank. The program, which has been running for over a decade, remains one of the company’s flagship health-focused CSR activities.
Expanding Impact Across the Ashanti Region
By extending this year’s AshantiFest blood donation drive to Mampong, MTN Ghana reinforces its strategic commitment to decentralizing its corporate social responsibility initiatives. The move ensures that critical interventions reach a broader spectrum of communities within the Ashanti Kingdom, particularly those that may not always have direct access to such life-saving opportunities.
Personal Stories Underscore Importance
For many participants, the exercise transcended routine medical engagement and became a deeply personal act of giving back.
Yaw Amankwah, a 26-year-old first-time donor, expressed pride in contributing to the cause. Recounting a personal experience, he noted that a relative of his once survived a life-threatening emergency at the Mampong Government Hospital due to the availability of blood.
“Being able to donate today feels like paying that kindness forward,” he said.
Similarly, Dorcas Ampofo, a 31-year-old trader, praised the initiative for its accessibility and convenience.
“Sometimes people want to help but don’t know where to go. Bringing this exercise to the community makes it easier for us to save lives while going about our daily activities,” she remarked.
A Lifeline for Healthcare
As healthcare systems across Ghana continue to grapple with periodic shortages of blood supplies, initiatives such as this stand out as critical lifelines. By combining public engagement with essential medical services, MTN Ghana’s AshantiFest blood donation drive not only addresses immediate healthcare needs but also fosters a long-term culture of voluntary blood donation.
Ultimately, the success of the exercise at Dufie Square reflects the power of community collaboration, corporate leadership, and shared responsibility in safeguarding lives—one pint of blood at a time.
