Augustus Andrews Nana Kwasi, Ashanti Regional Chairman of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), has called on traders in the region to reduce prices of goods to reflect the appreciation of the Ghana cedi against the US dollar.

Speaking to newsmen on Monday, marking exactly one year since the NDC government won the 2024 election, Nana Kwasi noted that the cedi has appreciated significantly, with the exchange rate now ranging from Ghc10-12 to a dollar, down from Ghc17 to a dollar previously.

Nana Kwasi expressed disappointment that despite the dollar depreciation , traders are still selling goods at high prices, depriving citizens of the benefits of the improved exchange rate.

“The dollar rate has reduced, and the Ghana cedi has appreciated, but traders are still selling goods at high prices. We appeal to them to do the needful so that citizens can benefit,” he said.

The NDC Chairman commended President John Dramani Mahama’s administration for the progress made in stabilizing the economy and appealed to party members to stay focused. “The government will ensure that it delivers on its promises and meets the expectations of every individual,” he assured.

Nana Kwasi’s appeal comes as Ghanaians prepare to celebrate the festive season, and citizens are hoping for relief from the high cost of living. The NDC Chairman’s call to traders is seen as a bid to ensure that the benefits of the cedi’s appreciation are passed on to consumers.

The exchange rate has been a major concern for Ghanaians in recent years, with the cedi experiencing significant depreciation. However, the current administration’s efforts to stabilize the economy have led to a notable appreciation of the cedi, and the NDC Chairman’s appeal to traders is expected to bring some relief to citizens.
