The National Democratic Congress (NDC) in Tarkwa-Nsuaem Constituency has denied allegations of illegally taking over small-scale mining concessions.

According to the party, the concessions in question were abandoned and had been the subject of disputes between local communities and private individuals.

The controversy surrounds two concessions: the Amantram shaft and the Wobedibi Small-Scale Mining Company. The Amantram shaft, an abandoned old vertical shaft belonging to Goldfields Ghana Limited, was discovered by the youth of Brahabobome community in 2019 and converted into a small-scale mining pit to create jobs. However, some individuals, allegedly backed by NPP financiers, attempted to claim ownership of the concession, prompting the Municipal Chief Executive, Hon. Ebenezer Cobbinah, to intervene and restore calm.

The NDC claims that Hon. Cobbinah’s intervention was necessary to prevent violence and ensure peace and stability in the community. The party also asserts that its leadership, including Hon. Issah Salifu Taylor, MP, and Hon. Danladi Salifu, Chairman, have not been involved in small-scale mining or galamsey activities. Instead, they are working to promote cooperative mining schemes and develop the Tarkwa-Nsuaem Constituency.
