257

A group within the New Patriotic Party (NPP), identifying itself as the National Identifiable Group of the NPP, has reminded the party’s national executives of the need for reform.

According to Mohammed Issah, Chairman of the group, the NPP requires reformation rather than a retreat. The group, a diverse coalition of loyal and independent-minded members across the country, expressed concern over the party’s performance and activities following the 2024 general elections defeat.

The group believes that the party leadership and stakeholders must urgently re-examine the party’s activities and performance. They reflected on what went wrong and what must be done to restore public trust and internal democracy within the party ahead of 2028. The group is determined to help reform the party and reclaim its dignity in the face of the electorates.

Recommendations for Reform.

The group made several recommendations for reform, including:

– Bottom-up Approach: The group advocates for a bottom-up, transparent process where all members participate meaningfully in selecting party leaders, including the flagbearer.
– No Imposition: The group is against the imposition of leaders from polling stations to national executives.
– Party Album Audit: The group recommends a thorough, decentralized audit of the party album to ensure accuracy, fairness, and inclusiveness.
– Expansion of Electoral College: The group proposes expanding the voting base to include a broader representation of constituents and grassroots voices.
– Abolition of Delegates System: The group recommends abolishing the delegates system, which has become synonymous with vote-buying and political coercion.
– Impartial Electoral Commission: The group proposes establishing an impartial internal electoral commission with independent observers to ensure fairness.
– Respect for Mandates: The group emphasizes the need to respect the mandates of elected officers and enforce institutional discipline.
– Fairness and Meritocracy: The group recommends that fairness and meritocracy be the guiding principles for appointments, endorsements, and recognition.

The group’s call for reform is a timely reminder of the need for the NPP to re-examine its activities and performance. By implementing these reforms, the party can restore public trust, promote internal democracy, and reclaim its dignity in the face of the electorates. The group urges the National Council, National Executive Committee, and Council of Elders to open doors to internal reforms, recognizing that the party’s future depends on transformation based on bold and honest restructuring.
