The Ashanti Regional Director of the National Service Authority (NSA), Mr Reagan Fynn, has donated assorted food items and beverages to inmates of the Kumasi Central Prisons as part of efforts to support their welfare and demonstrate compassion towards persons in custody.
The donation, which was presented at the prison premises in Kumasi, comprised 150 packs of waakye, 10 packs of bottled water and 10 packs of Jingo soft drinks.
Speaking during the presentation, Mr Fynn said the gesture was intended to provide a meal for the inmates and assure them that society had not abandoned them despite their circumstances.
He explained that the donation formed part of his commitment to promoting humanity and encouraging members of the public to show kindness to vulnerable groups, including prison inmates.
According to him, imprisonment should not deprive individuals of care and compassion, stressing that many inmates deserved support and encouragement as they prepared for their eventual reintegration into society.
“Not everyone in prison is there because of his or her own fault. Some may even be innocent, while others have found themselves in unfortunate situations. We should therefore treat them as members of our own families because anyone could find themselves in such circumstances,” he said.
Mr Fynn urged corporate organisations, religious bodies, philanthropists and individuals to regularly extend support to correctional facilities to help improve the living conditions of inmates.
He noted that such acts of generosity would not only complement government efforts but also give hope to inmates and encourage them to reform.
The management of the Kumasi Central Prisons expressed appreciation to Mr Fynn for the donation, describing it as timely and beneficial to the inmates.
They appealed to other institutions, organisations and benevolent individuals to emulate the gesture by supporting the prison with food, toiletries, medical supplies and other essential items to enhance the welfare of inmates.
