The Oforikrom Municipal Assembly is set to roll out a major sanitation initiative with the deployment of Principal Street Cleaners across key roads and principal streets within the municipality as part of efforts to improve environmental cleanliness and safeguard public health.

The initiative, announced by the Municipal Chief Executive (MCE), Hon Answel Sadat Ahmed forms part of the Assembly’s renewed commitment to ensuring a cleaner and healthier environment for residents, commuters and businesses.

According to the Assembly, all selected street cleaners will undergo a comprehensive orientation programme early next week before they begin work. The training is expected to equip them with the knowledge, skills and safety procedures required to effectively carry out their responsibilities.

The Assembly explained that the orientation will focus on proper waste collection practices, occupational safety, effective street sweeping techniques and public engagement to ensure professionalism and efficiency.
To enhance their safety and productivity, the Assembly will provide each cleaner with the necessary protective clothing and working tools. These include safety boots, heavy-duty gloves, branded T-shirts, high-visibility reflective vests, wooden brooms, rakes, cutlasses and protective nose masks.

Officials believe the provision of appropriate equipment will not only improve performance but also protect workers from occupational hazards associated with street cleaning.
As part of the operational plan, the Principal Street Cleaners will work daily between 5:00 a.m. and 8:00 a.m.

The Assembly said the early morning schedule is intended to minimize disruption to vehicular and pedestrian traffic while ensuring that roads and public spaces are cleaned before the start of the day’s business activities.

The Oforikrom Municipal Assembly emphasized that maintaining a clean municipality requires the collective effort of all residents and stakeholders. It therefore appealed to community members, motorists, traders and business operators to cooperate with the sanitation teams by avoiding indiscriminate littering and giving the cleaners the necessary space to perform their duties.

The Assembly expressed confidence that the initiative would significantly improve the municipality’s environmental outlook, reduce sanitation-related health risks and contribute to creating a more attractive and livable community.

Residents have also been encouraged to complement the Assembly’s efforts by observing proper waste disposal practices and supporting programmes aimed at promoting environmental cleanliness throughout the municipality.

The Assembly reaffirmed its commitment to sustaining sanitation improvements and implementing policies that will make Oforikrom one of the cleanest municipalities in the Ashanti Region.
