The Ashanti Regional Command of the Ghana Police Service has moved to dispel what it describes as misleading reports circulating in sections of the media regarding the temporary closure of the Assemblies of God Church at Bohyen Adumanu in Kumasi.

In an official statement signed by Deputy Superintendent of Police (DSP) Godwin Ahianyo, the Command clarified that the Police did not order the shutdown of the church, contrary to claims that have gained traction in recent days.
According to the statement, officers were deployed to the church premises strictly as a precautionary measure to maintain law and order, following heightened tensions linked to an internal succession dispute within the congregation. The Police emphasized that their presence was solely to prevent any potential breakdown of peace and to ensure the safety of worshippers and the surrounding community.
“The Police were present at the premises solely to maintain law and order,” the statement stressed, underscoring the Service’s role as a neutral security body in situations of civil unrest or dispute.
Crucially, the Command clarified that the decision to temporarily close the church was made by the national leadership of the Assemblies of God Church itself, and not by the Police. This distinction, authorities say, is important to correct public perception and prevent the spread of misinformation that could undermine confidence in law enforcement operations.
The incident at Bohyen Adumanu has drawn public attention amid concerns over internal disputes within religious institutions and their potential to escalate into broader security challenges. While details of the succession disagreement remain limited, the situation is understood to have created divisions significant enough to warrant intervention from both church leadership and security personnel.

Reaffirming its commitment to professionalism, the Police Service assured the public that it will continue to act in the interest of peace, stability, and public safety at all times. The Command also urged media outlets and the general public to verify information before dissemination, particularly on sensitive matters that could inflame tensions.

The Ashanti Regional Police Command reiterated that it remains dedicated to maintaining order across the region and will not hesitate to respond appropriately to any situation that threatens public tranquility.

The clarification is expected to calm tensions and provide reassurance to members of the church and the wider community, as efforts continue behind the scenes to resolve the internal dispute amicably.
