President John Dramani Mahama has praised Ghana’s smooth transfer of power from the New Patriotic Party (NPP) to the National Democratic Congress (NDC) as a testament to the country’s democratic credentials.
Speaking at the first Akwasidae festival at Manhyia Palace in Kumasi, President Mahama noted that this peaceful transition has earned Ghana recognition globally as a beacon of democracy .
President Mahama acknowledged that Ghana’s democracy is still a work in progress, but expressed pride in the country’s 32-year journey toward perfecting its democratic system.
He also highlighted the current economic challenges facing the nation, including high inflation, macroeconomic instability, and a debt default that has shut Ghana out of the international market.
To address these challenges, Mahama sought the cooperation and guidance of Asantehene Otumfuo Osei Tutu II, whom he praised for his influential role in promoting economic growth during his previous administration.
President Mahama assured the Asantehene that his government would prioritize the completion of abandoned projects in the Ashanti Region, including the Afari Military Hospital and the regional hospital at Sewua .
The President’s commitment to completing these projects is particularly significant, given the region’s importance to Ghana’s economic growth.
Asantehene Otumfuo Osei Tutu II has also emphasized the need for economic independence, noting that Ghana remains far from achieving this goal despite gaining independence 67 years ago .
