Regional Minister Briefs Public on Shooting Incident at Obuasi Funeral; Suspect Arrested

The Ashanti Regional Coordinating Council (ARCC), led by the Regional Minister, Dr. Frank Amoakohene, has officially addressed the public regarding a shooting incident that took place during a funeral in Obuasi on Saturday, November 29, 2025.

The incident resulted in the injury of a prominent traditional leader, Nana Kwabena Ponko ,the Adansi Dompoasehene.

According to the briefing received by the ARCC, a firearm was discharged at the community event, tragically injuring the Adanse Dompoasehene. The Ghana Police Service demonstrated swift professionalism in their response.

Officers immediately secured the scene and successfully arrested the suspect, identified as Nana Yaw Dankwa, a 30-year-old male.

The suspect is currently in police custody and is actively assisting with ongoing investigations to determine the full circumstances surrounding the discharge of the weapon.

The Regional Minister confirmed that the victim, Nana Kwabena Ponko received immediate and necessary medical treatment for his injuries. Critically, the Nanahene has since been discharged and has returned home, a development that offers relief amid the regional concern.

The ARCC briefing prominently highlighted how this unfortunate event underscores the critical necessity of the temporary ban on the use of firearms at funerals and traditional gatherings across the country, a directive issued by the Ministry of the Interior.

Dr. Amoakohene emphasized that the directive is not punitive but rather a vital public safety measure designed explicitly to protect lives and to prevent injuries.

The Regional Minister stressed that adherence to this directive is essential for maintaining public order and safeguarding the well-being of all attendees at traditional and social gatherings.

Concluding the address, the Regional Coordinating Council urged the public to remain calm and to cooperate fully with the security agencies as they proceed with their duties and investigations.

The ARCC, under the leadership of Dr. Amoakohene, took the opportunity to reaffirm its unwavering commitment to its core mandates of preserving peace, enhancing safety, and upholding the rule of law across the entire Ashanti Region.
