The Tatale-Sanguli District Assembly in the Northern Region has distributed 810 dual desks to basic schools across the district as part of efforts to improve teaching and learning conditions and address the persistent shortage of classroom furniture.
The intervention, spearheaded by the District Chief Executive (DCE), Hon. Mary Tagba, was funded through the District Assemblies Common Fund and is expected to provide immediate relief to pupils and teachers who have had to cope with inadequate furniture in some schools.
The presentation forms part of the Assembly’s broader commitment to improving educational infrastructure and creating a more conducive environment for effective teaching and learning in the district.
Speaking during the presentation, Hon. Mary Tagba explained that the furniture had been procured specifically for schools experiencing shortages of desks and other essential classroom facilities.
She said the Assembly was determined to ensure that no child in the district was compelled to sit on the floor or share inadequate furniture during lessons due to a lack of desks.
910 DESKS PLANNED.
According to the DCE, the Assembly originally planned to distribute 910 pieces of furniture to beneficiary schools.
However, she said, delays by the contractor responsible for producing the furniture had resulted in only 810 pieces being ready for the initial distribution.
She assured the education authorities and beneficiary schools that the remaining 100 pieces would be completed by next week and subsequently handed over to the District Education Directorate for distribution to the schools concerned.
Hon. Tagba said the intervention was a demonstration of the Assembly’s commitment to improving educational infrastructure and ensuring that pupils had access to basic facilities required for effective learning.
She stressed that adequate furniture was an essential component of quality education, as it contributed to a comfortable, orderly and conducive classroom environment for both teachers and learners.
COLLECTIVE EFFORT.
The DCE acknowledged previous interventions aimed at reducing the furniture deficit in the district, particularly an initiative by the Member of Parliament (MP) for the area, who, she said, distributed 910 pieces of furniture to schools last year.
She noted that the combined efforts of the District Assembly, the MP, the Ghana Education Service and other stakeholders would help accelerate efforts to eliminate the furniture deficit in schools across Tatale-Sanguli.
Hon. Tagba expressed appreciation to the President, John Dramani Mahama, for what she described as his commitment to improving conditions in schools and ensuring that pupils had access to essential learning facilities.
She said providing pupils with appropriate tables and chairs was crucial to making teaching and learning more effective, particularly in communities where schools continued to face infrastructure challenges.
APPEAL FOR MAINTENANCE
Hon. Tagba therefore appealed to school authorities, teachers, parents and community members to take proper care of the furniture and ensure that the desks were maintained for the benefit of present and future generations.
She stressed that the provision and preservation of school furniture was a collective responsibility and urged beneficiary schools to ensure that the desks were used strictly for their intended purpose.
Receiving the furniture on behalf of the beneficiary schools, the Tatale-Sanguli District Director of Education, Mr. Zakaria Masahudu, expressed gratitude to the DCE, the District Assembly and the President for the swift intervention.
Mr. Masahudu said the Education Directorate appreciated the Assembly’s efforts to address the furniture challenge and assured that the items would be distributed to the schools as directed.
He said the intervention would contribute significantly to improving classroom conditions and support teachers and pupils in their respective schools.
The distribution of the 810 dual desks is expected to bring immediate relief to beneficiary schools while the Assembly works to secure the remaining 100 pieces and address other educational infrastructure needs across the district.
The initiative further underscores the importance of collaboration among the District Assembly, the Education Directorate, political leaders, school authorities and communities in creating an enabling environment for quality education in Tatale-Sanguli District.
