The Metropolitan Chief Executive of Kumasi, Richard Ofori-Agyeman Boadi, has acknowledged the numerous challenges facing the city’s transport system and emphasized the need for a pragmatic approach to address them.
In a meeting with the Ashanti Regional Executives of the Ghana Private Road Transport Union (GPRTU), the Mayor outlined his vision for a vibrant and attractive transport industry that serves the public good and attracts investors.
The Mayor identified several challenges plaguing the transport sector, including loading at unauthorized locations, charging unauthorized fares, and the presence of unauthorized transport unions.
He emphasized the need for sustainable solutions to these challenges, which will require collaboration with transport stakeholders and the formation of a task force to identify, plan, and implement measures in line with the Assembly’s bye-laws and road traffic regulations.
Ofori-Agyeman Boadi expressed his eagerness to streamline the road transport sector, making it robust and attractive to investors. He believes that with the right approach, the transport industry can be transformed to serve the public good and contribute to the city’s economic growth.
The Mayor’s commitment to improving the transport sector was welcomed by the GPRTU, which has pledged to collaborate with the Assembly to maintain sanity and improve the transport industry. Sumaila Boakye, Regional Chairman of GPRTU, congratulated the Mayor on his new office and appealed to him to enforce laws and regulations in the transport industry.
