The Volta Regional Minister, Hon. James Gunu, has reaffirmed his commitment to improving educational infrastructure and the welfare of students across the region, following a working visit to the Taviefe Senior High School.

In a compassionate outreach effort on Tuesday, Hon. Gunu joined representatives from Health Horizons-China and Strategic Initiatives Limited (SIL) to distribute washable sanitary pads to female students of the school—an initiative aimed at enhancing menstrual hygiene and reducing absenteeism among young girls.

During his visit, the Minister was briefed by the Headmaster on several critical challenges confronting the school, including the urgent need for a reliable water supply, adequate accommodation for teachers, and furniture for the school’s newly constructed dining hall.

Responding to the concerns, Hon. Gunu assured the school community that his office would take immediate steps to provide a borehole to permanently address the school’s water crisis. “This falls in line with our broader water intervention strategy for schools across the region. Taviefe SHS will not be left behind,” he emphasized.

The Minister commended the leadership of Strategic Initiatives Limited and Torgbe Afede XIV for their proactive role in supporting the school’s female students, especially in advance of the government’s anticipated nationwide free sanitary pad policy rollout.

“To the young women here, I say: focus on your studies and don’t forget to develop your talents,” Hon. Gunu encouraged the students. He further pledged footballs and jerseys to boost the school’s sports programs.

Hon. Gunu noted that true progress is achieved when government, traditional leadership, and development partners work in concert to uplift educational institutions. “This is what progress looks like—when traditional leaders, donors, and government work as one for our schools,” he said.

The visit forms part of the Minister’s broader community engagement strategy, aimed at deepening government presence in underserved areas and ensuring equitable development across the Volta Region.
