Mr. Malik Basintale, the Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of the Youth Employment Authority (YEA), has commissioned the Make Fashion Inclusive Training Centre in Kumasi to train persons with disabilities in fashion and other entrepreneurial skills. The initiative is dedicated to empowering Persons with Disabilities (PWDs) in Ghana’s fashion industry.
Mr. Basintale explained that the programme is a landmark initiative that brings opportunities, dignity, and empowerment to persons with disabilities. He said it has been made possible through collaboration between the German Development Cooperation and the Youth Employment Agency under the broader vision of Invest for Ghana, which would not only transform the lives of Ghanaian young people but also create sustainable opportunities for persons living with disabilities.
According to him, it’s a bold statement that inclusion is not charity, but justice, fairness, and allowing persons with disabilities the opportunity to enjoy what they duly deserve. He noted that the Youth Employment Agency is proud to be part of the journey as a hub that has opened the door to independence, creating economic freedom for at least 100 persons living with disabilities. The training would not only cover fashion design but also brodary, beading, and millinery works, and would equip beneficiaries with tools to build their businesses and employ others to transform their communities.
Mr. Seth Atanga, Ashanti Regional Director of the Youth Employment Agency, stated that the programme is a beacon of hope and opportunity for persons living with disabilities. He disclosed that the initiative is dedicated to persons living with disabilities because the government believes in their potential and wants to help them improve their standard of living by moving them away from the streets. He added that YEA is always committed to creating sustainable jobs to absorb the teeming unemployed youth and ensure that no one is left behind.
