Comfort Darbo, a member of the ruling New Patriotic Party Women’s wing and a former Assembly member in the Ahafo Ano North District of the Ashanti region, has expressed concern as a woman and an Advocate for women regarding the Standing and Adhoc committee release in the Press by the General Secretary, Lawyer Justin Kodua Frimpong.
She described the appointment as a discriminatory against women in the party against their contributions over the years.
According to him, the names of persons she has come across to work for the various Standing and Adhoc committees in the New Patriotic Party (NPP) shows clearly that the party does not recognize the women efforts over the years.
She stated that, the names published were Gender Discriminatory against such
appointments did not represent the women population in the party, says
the sixty-six (66) total members nominated for the respective six committees only sixteen (16) were women, representing 24 percentage, the statistics she said are below the belt, distressing, and do not show the significance efforts women in NPP have demonstrated since the formation of the party.
She was of the view that, women in Ghana, and for that matter, Women in Politics, need equal representation now.
She reiterated that, supporting more women into decision-making committees would help the party to reverse the low levels of women’s representation and increase their participation in active politics.
The former Assembly member stressed that, the NPP can boast of more educated, skilled and hard working women who are equally proficient to give positive results as their male counterparts.
She disclosed that, in a democracy, every part of the population must be equally be represented, having both women and men involved in decision making broadens the standpoints, increases creativity and innovation, diversifies the pool of talents, competencies and improves the process of decision-making.
She made a passionate appeal to the National Officer and the National Council of elders to involve more women in the boardroom, to enable the party build the NPP and Ghana with women.
