The Parliamentary Candidate of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) in Amenfi Central Constituency in the Western Region,Hon Joana Gyan Cudjoe has paid four months advance salary to some community teachers in her area.
Her vision for the initiative is to promote teaching and learning in the rural communities where there are shortage of teachers and to release burden of levies from parents in such communities in Amenfi Central constituency.
The NDC as a political party has the welfare of teachers at heart hence His Excellency John Dramani Mahama’s plan to introduce a 20% allowance for teachers and health workers who accept postings to rural areas.
Paying the advance salaries to the teachers in Amenfi Central last Monday,Hon Joana Gyan Cudjoe explained that this incentive aims to encourage more personnel to serve in rural areas, bridging the development gap between rural and urban communities.
She noted that currently, most teachers prefer to work in urban areas, leaving rural areas with limited access to essential services.
To address this, she’s poised to provide allowances to those she has employed their service to rural areas ,motivate them to ensure conducive teaching and learning.
President John Dramani Mahama has however promised to push ahead basic salary for teachers and health workers who accept postings to rural areas. Most of our teachers and health workers don’t want to go to rural areas, everybody wants to serve in the city.”
“So, we are going to map out what we define as our areas, if you accept posting to go there, you’ll get 20% of your basic salary as an incentive, to teach in the rural area.”
