A Regional Organizer of the governing National Democratic Congress (NDC), Isham Alhassan Bonsu, has officially announced his intention to contest for the Ashanti Regional Chairmanship of the party in the 2026 regional elections.
The declaration was made during a well-attended birthday celebration in Kumasi, which drew party executives, grassroots members, and supporters from across the Ashanti Region.
Speaking to journalists at the event, Mr. Bonsu reflected on his long-standing service to the NDC, noting that his political journey began at the ward level in 1992 and progressed through constituency and regional leadership roles.
He said his experience as both Deputy Regional Organizer and Regional Organizer has equipped him with the knowledge and skills needed to lead the party effectively in the region.
According to him, years of mentorship under respected party figures such as Ambassador Daniel Ohene Agyekum, Nti Fordjour, Yaw Obimpeh, and the current Regional Chairman, Nana Akwasi, have further shaped his leadership abilities.
Mr. Bonsu expressed confidence in his readiness for the challenge ahead, stating that the Ashanti Region requires strong leadership, unity, and strategic direction to advance the party’s fortunes.
He appealed to party faithful to begin early mobilisation in support of his bid, stressing the need for collective effort from now until the regional elections expected in November 2026.
The event was attended by several regional executives, District Chief Executives, constituency executives, and polling station officers, many of whom welcomed the announcement with enthusiasm.
His declaration was met with prolonged applause, signalling strong grassroots backing and interest in his candidature, including support from some associates of the incumbent regional chairman.
With the announcement, the contest for the NDC Ashanti Regional Chairmanship is expected to intensify, although it remains uncertain whether the current chairman, Andrews Augustus Nana Akwasi, will seek another term.
Several party members present openly endorsed Mr. Bonsu’s bid, describing him as a unifying figure with deep roots in the party and the organisational strength needed to reposition the NDC in the Ashanti Region.
