MTN Ghana marked Christmas Day by donating baby hampers to newborns at the Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital (KATH) in Kumasi, part of an annual nationwide outreach that supports babies born on 25 December.
The telecommunications company said it distributed 700 hampers across Ghana this year, with many presented at KATH and other selected hospitals, including the Kumasi Children’s Hospital at Pampaso and the Suntreso Hospital.
The hampers, which included diapers, detergents, toys and personal care products, were aimed at easing immediate costs for mothers who delivered on the public holiday.
“Christmas is not only about celebration but also about giving,” said Obed Adu-Amankwaah, MTN Ghana’s area sales manager for the Ashanti and Bono and Bono East regions.
He said the initiative, now in its 14th year, reflected the company’s commitment to communities where it operates.
According to MTN Ghana, 310 of this year’s hampers were allocated to northern Ghana as part of the nationwide distribution.
Hospital authorities welcomed the donation but called for broader support beyond seasonal gestures.
Dorcas Asamoah Nyamekye, nurse manager at the obstetrics and gynaecology unit at KATH, said the hospital recorded 13 deliveries on Christmas Day and noted that some mothers struggle to settle medical bills after childbirth.
“We appreciate this support, but sustained assistance would make a bigger difference,” she said, urging other corporate organisations to support maternal and child health services.
Beneficiary mothers described the donations as timely, saying the gesture added meaning to giving birth on Christmas Day.
