Tension within the New Patriotic Party (NPP) has escalated sharply in the Sunyani West Constituency following the disruption of a political engagement involving Madam Irene Naa Torshie Addo, a prominent party member and former Member of Parliament for the Tema West Constituency.

According to eyewitness accounts and party insiders, supporters of Mr. Kwame Baffoe, popularly known as Abronye DC and the Bono Regional Chairman of the NPP, allegedly disrupted Madam Naa Torshie Addo’s scheduled interaction with party delegates .

The incident reportedly included the abrupt cutting of electricity to the venue, creating an atmosphere of confusion and tension, and ultimately forcing Madam Addo to address delegates from her car instead of the designated platform.

Madam Irene Naa Torshie Addo, who currently serves as a key member of the campaign team of New Patriotic Party flagbearer hopeful, Hon. Kennedy Ohene Agyepong, was in the constituency as part of internal consultations and engagements aimed at strengthening party unity ahead of upcoming internal processes.

Sources close to the event describe the engagement as peaceful and well-organised until the alleged interference occurred.

Witnesses say the sudden power outage disrupted the programme midway, plunging the venue into darkness and bringing proceedings to a halt.

Amid growing unease among delegates and supporters, Madam Addo was advised by her team to relocate for safety reasons.

She subsequently continued her address from her vehicle, speaking to delegates who had gathered around in shock and disbelief.

Members of the party present at the scene have since condemned the incident in strong terms, describing it as a “grave blow to internal party democracy.”

They argue that such acts of intimidation undermine the core democratic values upon which the NPP was founded and risk deepening internal divisions at a critical moment in the party’s history.

“This incident is unacceptable and must be urgently investigated,” one visibly disturbed party member stated.

“Intimidation has no place in the NPP. Our internal contests and engagements must be conducted in an atmosphere of mutual respect, tolerance, and fairness.”

Others echoed similar sentiments, warning that the use of disruptive tactics against fellow party members could erode confidence among grassroots supporters and weaken the party’s cohesion ahead of future elections.

Some delegates reportedly left the venue disheartened, expressing concern about the direction of internal politics within the party.

As of the time of filing this report, neither Mr. Kwame Baffoe nor the Bono Regional NPP leadership had officially responded to the allegations.

However, calls are growing within the party for national executives to intervene swiftly, investigate the circumstances surrounding the disruption, and take appropriate action to prevent a recurrence.

Political observers note that the incident in Sunyani West highlights the rising tensions accompanying internal political manoeuvring within the NPP.

They caution that unless decisively addressed, such developments could overshadow the party’s broader agenda and distract from efforts to present a united front to the Ghanaian electorate.

For many party faithful, the events in Sunyani West serve as a sobering reminder that internal democracy must be protected at all costs, regardless of factional interests or loyalties.

As one delegate succinctly put it, “If we cannot tolerate each other within our own party, how can we convince Ghanaians that we are ready to govern together?”
