Residents of Obuasi and several surrounding communities in the Ashanti Region are currently facing a temporary disruption in water supply following the shutdown of the Odaso Water Treatment Plant due to serious power challenges.
Ghana Water Limited (GWL), Ashanti Regional Office, has officially announced that the Odaso Water Treatment Plant was forced to suspend operations after a faulty transformer at Sewhi Asarenso affected the plant’s electricity supply.
According to the press release issued by the Management of Ghana Water Ltd., the shutdown took effect on Saturday, February 14, 2026, at exactly 10:00 a.m., when the plant could no longer function as a result of unstable power supply.
Faulty Transformer Cripples Production
The Odaso Treatment Plant, a major facility responsible for providing treated water to Obuasi and nearby towns, depends heavily on consistent electricity to operate its pumping and purification systems.
However, the faulty transformer supplying power to the production facility has caused a complete halt in treatment processes, leading to reduced or unavailable water supply in the distribution network.
“The Odaso Water Treatment Plant has been temporarily shut down… due to a faulty transformer at Sewhi Asarenso, which supplies power to the production facility,” the statement explained.
ECG Engineers Working to Restore Power
Ghana Water Ltd. assured the public that engineers from the Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG) are actively working around the clock to rectify the fault and restore power supply to the plant.
The company noted that the restoration of operations will begin immediately once electricity is reinstated.
“Engineers from ECG are currently working to rectify the fault and restore power to enable the resumption of operations,” the release added.

“Management sincerely apologizes for the inconvenience caused and assures the general public that water supply will be restored immediately power is reinstated,” the company said.
Public Advised to Use Water Judiciously
