The Ashanti Regional Office of the Public Utilities Regulatory Commission (PURC) has reassured electricity consumers in the Ashanti Region of its unwavering commitment to ensuring a stable and reliable power supply across the region.

The assurance was given during separate radio education programmes aired on Silver 98.3 FM and Opemsuo 104.7 FM on March 4, 2026, where officials of the Commission addressed pressing concerns raised by residents regarding electricity and water services.

The engagement formed part of the Commission’s ongoing public education drive aimed at strengthening consumer awareness and promoting transparency in the regulation of utility services.

Officials from the Ashanti Regional Office revealed that the assurance followed a high-level meeting held on March 3, 2026, between the Commission and the Sub-Transmission Unit of the Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG).

According to the Commission, the meeting provided an opportunity to discuss several concerns that have recently been raised by consumers in the region and to work toward practical solutions to address them.

One of the major issues highlighted during the discussions was the recent spate of intermittent power outages affecting parts of the Ashanti Region. Residents have in recent weeks expressed concerns over frequent power cuts that have disrupted businesses, domestic activities, and public services.

PURC officials explained that both the Commission and ECG are actively collaborating to identify the root causes of the outages and implement measures to ensure that power supply in the region remains stable and dependable.

Another concern raised by consumers during the radio discussions was the rapid depletion of electricity prepaid units.

The Commission acknowledged that several complaints had been received from customers who claimed that their prepaid credit was being exhausted quicker than expected.

In response, the PURC indicated that investigations are currently underway to determine the factors responsible for the situation.

Officials assured the public that the Commission takes such concerns seriously and will ensure that any anomalies discovered are addressed promptly in the interest of consumers.

Addressing Meter Acquisition Challenges
The Commission also addressed complaints regarding delays and difficulties associated with acquiring electricity meters.

According to the PURC, there is a clearly defined process for obtaining meters through the appropriate channels of the Electricity Company of Ghana. Consumers were therefore advised to strictly follow official procedures and avoid dealing with intermediaries or middlemen who often exploit unsuspecting applicants.

The Commission encouraged residents who experience unusual delays in acquiring meters to report such issues directly to the PURC so that the Commission can intervene where necessary.

Commitment to Resolving Utility Service Issues
Beyond electricity-related concerns, the PURC reiterated its readiness to address other challenges consumers may face with both electricity and water service providers in the region.
Officials emphasised that the Commission remains the regulatory body mandated to ensure fairness, efficiency, and accountability in the delivery of public utility services.
They urged consumers to take advantage of the Commission’s complaint channels whenever they encounter challenges with service providers.

Promoting Collaborative Regulation
The Ashanti Regional Office further highlighted its operational theme for the year, “Collaborative Regulation for Strategic Impact.”
According to the Commission, the theme underscores the importance of cooperation between regulators, utility service providers, and consumers in achieving efficient and sustainable service delivery.
Officials noted that effective regulation is not solely the responsibility of regulatory bodies but requires the active participation of consumers through feedback, reporting of irregularities, and adherence to proper procedures.

Encouraging Consumer Participation
The PURC encouraged residents of the Ashanti Region to remain engaged with the Commission’s public education programmes and to report concerns promptly.

By strengthening collaboration among stakeholders, the Commission believes the region can achieve a more reliable and efficient electricity and water supply system.
The Ashanti Regional Office reaffirmed its commitment to protecting the interests of consumers while working closely with utility providers to improve service delivery across the region.
