As the rainy season sets in with its accompanying muddy and waterlogged conditions, the Chief Executive Officer of PIWAK Natural Health, producers of the popular 3P Garlic Mixture, Dr. Prince Nelson Mortoti, has cautioned Ghanaians to pay closer attention to foot hygiene to prevent foot rot, a common but often neglected condition that can lead to serious health complications if left untreated.
According to Dr. Mortoti, prolonged exposure of the feet to dirty water, mud, damp footwear and poor hygiene significantly increases the risk of developing foot rot, particularly among farmers, traders, construction workers, schoolchildren and others whose daily activities expose them to wet environments.
He explained that foot rot is an infection that affects the skin and tissues of the feet, usually occurring when the feet remain wet for long periods.
The condition often begins with itching, whitening of the skin between the toes, foul odour and skin peeling, but can progress to painful sores, swelling and severe bacterial or fungal infections if prompt treatment is not sought.
“The rainy season creates the perfect environment for germs and fungi to thrive. Many people spend hours in wet shoes or walk barefoot through contaminated water, unknowingly exposing themselves to infections that can become serious if ignored,” he said.
Dr. Mortoti noted that although foot rot is generally preventable, many people underestimate its seriousness until complications develop.
He warned that untreated foot infections can spread beyond the skin, causing painful ulcers, persistent inflammation and, in severe cases, damage to deeper tissues, especially among individuals with weakened immune systems.
He added that people living with diabetes and other chronic conditions should be particularly vigilant because foot infections can heal slowly and may lead to more severe complications if not managed properly.
To reduce the risk of foot rot, Dr. Mortoti advised the public to maintain proper foot hygiene by washing their feet thoroughly with clean water and soap after exposure to muddy or flood-prone areas.
He further recommended drying the feet completely, especially between the toes, before wearing socks or shoes, stressing that moisture trapped between the toes creates favourable conditions for fungal growth.
He also encouraged the use of clean, dry socks, well-ventilated footwear and regular replacement of damp shoes to minimise infection risks.
In addition to maintaining good hygiene, Dr. Mortoti underscored the importance of strengthening the body’s natural immune system through proper nutrition and healthy lifestyle choices.
He said 3P Garlic Mixture, produced from natural garlic extract, serves as a valuable dietary supplement that supports the body’s natural defence mechanisms.
According to him, garlic has long been recognised for its beneficial nutritional properties and contains naturally occurring compounds that support overall wellness.
He explained that regular consumption of 3P Garlic Mixture, together with good personal hygiene, a balanced diet and prompt medical attention for persistent symptoms, can contribute to maintaining good health during the rainy season.
Dr. Mortoti, however, advised individuals experiencing persistent foot pain, swelling, discharge or worsening wounds to seek immediate medical attention rather than relying solely on self-treatment.
He stressed that early diagnosis and appropriate medical care remain the best approach to preventing complications from foot infections.
The PIWAK Natural Health CEO further urged Ghanaians to adopt preventive health measures throughout the rainy season by keeping their surroundings clean, avoiding prolonged contact with contaminated water and taking proactive steps to maintain strong immunity.
He reiterated that prevention remains the most effective strategy against many seasonal infections and encouraged the public to prioritise personal hygiene and healthy living to safeguard their wellbeing.
“Healthy feet are essential to a healthy life.
During this rainy season, let us protect ourselves by maintaining proper hygiene, eating nutritious foods, supporting our immune systems and seeking prompt medical care whenever necessary,” Dr. Mortoti advised.
